august 14, 2021 [9:25 pm] hi !! i wanna ramble about different metal subgenres because i like metal :p im also gonna recommend some of my favorite bands for each genre !! im only doing 6 because if i did all of the subgenres this blog would be way too long, and also because i feel like it would be a bit tricky since some bands do mesh multiple subgenres together in their music :0black metal within the black metal subgenre, i think that dsbm and nsbm are 2 of the subgenres that people in the community tend to buzz on about. ive tried listening to a bit of dsbm before and its alright, i dont think its particularly amazing or terrible. as for nsbm, ive never really tried listening to any of the bands or music within the subgenre, and i dont intend on doing so at all because the whole subgenre is literally built off fascism and white supremacist ideologies, its disgusting and fucked up. speaking of disgusting and fucked up, the way ive seen some mayhem fans romanticize all the morbid horrible shit mayhem has done is so off-putting. ive seen some fans literally swoon over euronymous. im pretty sure everyone in the community is aware of all the nasty things hes done so i dont understand why some people still go goo goo eyes over him. despite me not really being super into this subgenre, some bands that i think are worth checking out are marduk, mutiilation, darkthrone, taake, and bathory.
death metal i think death metal would have to be my favorite subgenre of metal just because of how headbangable it is? im not a music expert so i dont really know if im getting the terms correct but i guess it has something to do with the fast tempo? it gives me this sort of adrenaline rush and gets me super hyped up, and it feels super good just headbanging it all out. not to mention the really brutal gruesome vocals and death growls! i love them so much! my favorite death metal bands are obituary, dying fetus, amon amarth, bloodbath, macabre, children of bodom, and death.
nu metal this was basically my gateway subgenre for getting into metal and i think it is for a lot of other people as well. it makes me sad that people shit on this genre because it genuinely still slaps to me. i guess i agree that limp bizkit is kinda goofy (i only like rollin from them and it is kind of a guilty pleasure song) but generally i dont think the genre as a whole sucks. some of my favorite nu metal bands that got me into exploring metal more are slipknot, system of a down, korn, and kittie.
power metal another subgenre that sadly gets shit on. i mean i can understand why since its definitely not as heavy or brutal compared to other subgenres but i still think its pretty fun and i like the idea of metal meshing with fantasy. i really dig a lot of power metal instrumentals, and although power metal vocalists sing incredibly, its not really the style i typically enjoy with metal. i do enjoy the vocals on some power metal songs but i think for the most part its not really my cup of tea. personally, i think it would be interesting and maybe even more enjoyable if more power metal vocals were similar to melodic death metal vocals. im aware that the instrumentals in power metal and melodic death metal are different, but think of children of bodom and how their sound has a bit of power metal influence to it. i have a bit of a soft spot for power metal because i always think of my boyfriend whenever i listen to it since hes into d&d! some power metal bands i recommend are blind guardian, helloween, rhapsody of fire, crimson shadows, and guardians of time.
progressive metal i think progressive metal is interesting because of its complex structures and technicality but to be honest, i really dont know much about it and i feel like theres just a lot to it. ive noticed that a lot of progressive metal songs tend to be long and i think some of the instrumentals tend to drag on for too long before getting the vocals, which im personally not a fan of most of the time but ill occasionally enjoy it if im in some kind of mood. i dont think progressive metal is terrible but its not something id hardcore jam out to. the only two progressive metal bands that i really like and listen to a lot are opeth and porcupine tree.
thrash metal i see some similarities with thrash and death metal, so obviously i enjoy thrash! i think thrash is kinda like death metal except less heavy both in terms of sound and vocals. nonetheless, it’s still really fun and enjoyable! other, than that i dont think i really have much to say for thrash. some thrash bands i like are metallica, megadeth, slayer, power trip, venom, and nuclear assault. |
